Dewar Close care home achieves first CQC outstanding rating in Rugby

Dewar Close on Beech Drive, Bilton, has become the first Rugby care home to be awarded a rating of outstanding by the Care Quality Commission after an unannounced visit in April 2016.

Dewar Close is not only the first home in Rugby to achieve this top rating, it's also the third of WCS Care's 12 homes to have been recently rated as outstanding - meaning 1 in 4 homes have made the top grade for this Warwickshire-based care home charity against a national average of just 1 in every 200 care homes.

Beatrice Leatherbarrow, 104, and Marjorie Timms, 102, who live at Dewar Close are both very proud of their home.

"I love my home - I recently had some decoration done to my room and I'm cock a hoop about it! I usually have a drop of brandy in my afternoon tea, so this is a great excuse to add a drop more," said Beatrice.

Marjorie agrees, explaining, "I like having my own space with my own personal items in it as well as being part of a lovely community of residents who like to spend time together."

Dewar Close achieved the highest possible rating following an unannounced inspection in April 2016. The report notes that "people were at the heart of the service and were supported to maintain their purpose and pleasure in life."

Residents felt that they "pleased themselves about how they spent their time" while relatives who were spoken to by the inspector reported that, "the staff are wonderful.  There's a lot of love here" and "The reality is that care is determined by the individual person."

"At WCS Care we want to make sure that every day is a day well lived - that for the people who live in our homes their lives are rich and diverse, spent with the people they like to spend time with and full of the activities they enjoy," explained WCS Care Chief Executive, Christine Asbury.

"We work hard to make sure people get the highest quality care - and with that comes the ability to be in charge of your life and have lots of opportunities to carry on doing the things you've always done. CQC identified the insight and understanding staff show in caring for people at Dewar Close.

"The report, which is now publically available, gives very clear examples of why Dewar Close has received its outstanding rating. It recognises our use of innovative technologies and our focus on improving people's lives - for example our employment of dedicated exercise and activity staff 7 days a week to ensure people make the most of every single day.

"As a not for profit care provider we think values are fundamental, and it's excellent that CQC have recognised how we encourage and support people to live with meaning and purpose every day and that we value people's experience and opinions. Ultimately, what's most important to us is that residents themselves, and their families, think they've got the care they need."
